Vancouver School Board Heritage Committee

In 2004, members of the Vancouver Retired Teachers Association (VRTA) and the Vancouver Association of Secondary School Administrators Alumni (VASSA-A) came together to form the VSB Heritage Centre Steering Committee.

Beginning in 2006 a strong group of volunteers began donating many hours of work to enable the preservation and use of VSB materials.  The Vancouver School Board Heritage Committee is a group of retired teachers and administrators from the Vancouver school district.

They are working  together to establish a Heritage Centre to preserve and promote the legacy of public education in Vancouver.  Committee members are supported by the staff and administration of VSB to meet the following goals:

  • Collect, catalogue, preserve, and display historical photos, documents (annual reports, pamphlets, school histories), and artifacts related to the history of the Vancouver School Board.
  • Facilitate legal access to digital pictures, historical documents and artifacts for members of the current VSB community and those who participated here in the past.
  • Serve those doing historical educational research by illuminating the progress the Vancouver School Board’s delivery public education over the years and demonstrate its contributions to education in British Columbia, Canada, and the World.

As of 2011 more than 3600 photographs featuring VSB elementary and secondary schools have been processed into a digital archive and the work is ongoing.  Many material culture items have been collected including rare books and regalia.
