On Monday, May 13 close to 100 high school students from across the city teamed up with VPD school liaison officers in a tug-of-war contest, called Pulling for Inner City Kids, on the north lawn of the Vancouver Art Gallery. The tug-of-war is an annual event hosted by CLICK (Contributing to Lives of Inner City Kids) and the VPD.

Every Wednesday after school Filipino youth from four VSB secondary schools converge at South Hill’s gym to compete in a basketball tournament. This program is planned and led entirely by immigrant/refugee youth (both boys and girls) from John Oliver through the Engaged Immigrant Youth Program.

Students from Kindergarten to Grade 7 at Edith Cavell Elementary have been working with the Boogaloo Academy of Dance for the last few years developing and refining their Hip Hop dance skills. This year, as in other years, they presented a school-wide dance show for their peers and parents.

David Thompson Secondary has a lot of things going for it. One of those things is an all-star curling team. On February 27, the school sent their curling team to Kamloops where they representated the lower mainland at the high school provincial curling championships.

This winter six John Oliver Secondary Take a Hike Alternative Program students became mentors for a day with a around 16 Grade 2 and 3 students from Seymour Elementary. Last month, the students headed up to the snowy wonderland that is Cypress Mountain for a day of snowshoeing.

On January 15, Churchill Secondary students got a visit from a handful of BC Lions players. As part of the "Be More Than A Bystander" program, the Lions players emphasized the role everyone can play in promoting healthy relationships and creating more respectful, peaceful schools and communities.

Pink Day is coming up and this year students from across the district will be dancing up a storm. The Pink Day dance is currently being led by David Lloyd George and Churchill. On Tuesdau, January 15, students from both schools along with other district students headed down to Churchill's lunchroom to practice (en masse) for the big "dancing" day.

In late November, Elsie Roy Elementary students were invited to an epic skating event and got to skate around with none other than Trevor Linden. The impromtu ice rink was made from a special plastic surface (synthetic ice) that acted as the ice rink, but was far harder to glide on then a traditional rink for everyone but Linden.

Each year Gladstone's incredible dance program shows its colors with an amazing and eclectic series of dance routines. This year, students performed a wide range of styles including everything from R&B to tap dancing.

Run, eat, sleep and repeat. That’s the regime that each and every dedicated member of Killarney’s cross country running team follows. During this season, the young men and women of this team have trained hard, and persevered through blood, sweat, and tears together to win the  Cross Country League Championships.

David Oppenheimer Elementary students and staff were treated to a presentation by Liz Gleadle, London 2012 Olympic Games Women’s Javelin Finalist (finishing in 12th place) and Canadian Women’s Record Holder. An alumnus of Kitsilano Secondary, she was in her hometown to share her story of competing in the games, her journey to the Olympics, and why it’s ok to try many different activities and be who you are.
