Fleming Carnival and Centennial Draws Hundreds

In early June, Fleming Elementary celebrated its centennial with cake, a carnival and all sorts of fantastic dressed up "decade" rooms.

World Class Theatre Company Opens Arts Campus at Carleton Elementary

On Thursday, June 6, the Vancouver arts community, Vancouver School Board Trustees and staff as well as officials from the provincial government and the City of Vancouver came together to celebrate the grand opening of the Green Thumb Theatre Campus. The new arts centre is located at 5522 McKinnon Street, behind Sir Guy Carleton Elementary School.

VSB Grounds Staff Pave the Way for School Garden Projects

Both district staff and teachers on the ground say Vancouver School Board grounds staff led by Murray Stewart and Jonn Eppelette have been critical in helping move forward a sizable number of school garden projects at a growing number of elementary schools spread across the district.

Fleming School Set to Celebrate its Centennial

Fleming Elementary will be inviting current students and older alumni to head back to school on Friday, May 31from 4 - 8 PM. In the early part of the evening, the school will host an Open House (from 4 -6 PM) which will include school tours,  displays and an assembly. A special Fleming video project, which was created by the entire student body just for this celebration, will be featured.

Scientist-in-Residence Program Receives $20,000 Cheque to Support Student Programming

On Friday, May 3, students in grades 4 and 5 at Queen Mary Elementary School were experimenting with methods to clean water samples containing suspended particulate material. The week before, the classes had taken a field trip to Stanley Park where they got a first-hand look at the diversity of marine organisms in the intertidal zone.

New VSB School to be Named Norma Rose Point School

Construction is currently underway on the Vancouver School Board's newest elementary school. After undertaking a public campaign to solicit ideas for the name of the new school, the Naming Committee recently announced the new school would be named Norma Rose Point School.

VSB Board Passes Balanced Budget

On April 29 the Vancouver Board of Education formally adopted a balanced Preliminary 2013-14 Operating Budget. The budget was the result of weeks of public consultation with stakeholder groups and the general public.

Vex Robotics Championships at BCIT, a group of Gladstone Secondary students helped inaugurate a plan that will enhance career and training opportunities for young skilled workers interested in science, technology, engineering and math.

Gladstone Student Graphic Designer's Pink Poster Blankets the District

Gladstone Grade 11 student Carmen Cheung wasn't always set on graphic design. She says she got into it by accident in Grade 9 thanks to peer pressure from a few friends who encouraged her to give it a try. Since taking her initial Photoshop classes, Cheung says she's grown to love design.

New U-Hill Secondary Open for Business

Students, staff, VSB Trustees and BC Premier Christy Clark were on hand February 14 for the official opening of the district's newest $37.9-million secondary school. Following a series of speeches, the Premier conducted a town hall with 150 Grade 11-12 students.

VSB Presents Ambitious Seismic Upgrade Plan to Vancouver City Council

The Vancouver School Board has submitted an $850 million capital plan request to the Ministry of Education in order to upgrade or replace over the next five years 30 of the 42 schools which have a high seismic risk. In addition, our five year capital plan includes requests for three new schools as well as building envelope and mechanical upgrade projects.
