English language learner information
A number of resources are available for students who speak English langauge learner (ELL) in Vancouver schools.
District Resource and Placement Centre (DRPC)
DRPC offices are located in Moberly Elementary (east wing), 1000 East 59th Ave.
Students who must register at DRPC include:
Kindergarten-Grade 12 students born in Canada, and who DO NOT speak English as their home language. Note: Children must register with a parent or legal guardian at DRPC;
Kindergarten-Grade 12 students born outside Canada, regardless of language spoken at home. Note: Children must register with a parent or legal guardian at DRPC.

Multicultural Liaison Workers
The Multicultural Liaison Workers are the home language-based cultural bridge of the Vancouver School Board, knowledgeable and active members of their ethnic communities.

Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS)
The SWIS Program is ‘housed’ in the District Reception and Placement Centre in Vancouver, which gives the registrants direct access to the SWIS services. The workers are also based in schools so they have direct contact with clients and school resources.
The SWIS team comes from diverse cultural backgrounds and have multiple language capacities to accommodate more immigrants and refugees. This program falls under the Vancouver School Board District #39.
Engaged Immigrant Youth Program
The Engaged Immigrant Youth program targets immigrant youth in grades 10, 11 and 12 attending VSB schools. New immigrant and refugee youth in these grades are often at risk for not completing secondary school due to their lack of engagement with their school.
