May 5 marks the National Day of Awareness and Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people (MMIWG2SLGBTQI+) This day serves as a solemn reminder of those who have tragically lost their lives to colonial and gender-based violence, while also acknowledging the enduring grief of their families and communities. 

Recognized as Red Dress Day, it is a poignant occasion dedicated to honouring the memory of missing and murdered Indigenous relatives. Through raising awareness and fostering education, this day aims to shed light on the plight of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people.

At VSB’s Education Centre, the art gallery crafted by both students and staff is curated as a tribute to relatives, amplifying the voices and stories of those affected. The exhibition opened April 8, 2024, and will be available until May 6, 2024. 

On May 3, 2024, District staff will participate in an Honour Ceremony to foster learning and memoriam. Schools across the District have taken part in various events to remember and honour this day. Everyone is encouraged to take time to learn about the meaning behind Red Dress Day, and to continue learning and unlearning about the impacts of colonialism and genocide still present today.
