Tecumseh Heads to Camp Elphinstone -

This May, Grade 6 students and teachers took a trip to Camp Elphinstone in Gibsons BC. Although the campers were expecting three days of rain, in the end the sun decided to make an appearance many times forcing students and staff to slather themselves in sunscreen. All and all, Tecumseh staff say the visit was a spectacular success.

West Alternative Program Arms Students with Real World Skills -

Students were all smiles at the West Alt Ed Graduation Ceremony on Tuesday, June 4. During the ceremony, students were individually honoured for their hard work and diligence in completing the unique program, which blends an intimate community with activity (both inside and outside the classroom), business savvy lessons and real-life learning that incorporates arts, sciences, physical activity and math.

On May 22 at 1 PM, all of Weir Elementary headed out into the sun to participate in the school community clean-up. The clean-up was part of the school code of conduct that supports respecting the environment.

World Class Theatre Company Opens Arts Campus at Carleton Elementary -

On Thursday, June 6, the Vancouver arts community, Vancouver School Board Trustees and staff as well as officials from the provincial government and the City of Vancouver came together to celebrate the grand opening of the Green Thumb Theatre Campus. The new arts centre is located at 5522 McKinnon Street, behind Sir Guy Carleton Elementary School.

CLICK and Vancouver Police Department Raise Awareness for Child Poverty -

On Monday, May 13 close to 100 high school students from across the city teamed up with VPD school liaison officers in a tug-of-war contest, called Pulling for Inner City Kids, on the north lawn of the Vancouver Art Gallery. The tug-of-war is an annual event hosted by CLICK (Contributing to Lives of Inner City Kids) and the VPD.

Engaged Immigrant Youth Program Draws in Youth with Basketball -

Every Wednesday after school Filipino youth from four VSB secondary schools converge at South Hill’s gym to compete in a basketball tournament. This program is planned and led entirely by immigrant/refugee youth (both boys and girls) from John Oliver through the Engaged Immigrant Youth Program.

Students from Kindergarten to Grade 7 at Edith Cavell Elementary have been working with the Boogaloo Academy of Dance for the last few years developing and refining their Hip Hop dance skills. This year, as in other years, they presented a school-wide dance show for their peers and parents.

On Thursday, May 16, 2012, students from Trudeau Elementary thrilled hundreds as they sang and danced their way through an updated version of John Jacobson’s musical “Rock and Roll Forever”.  Bringing classics to life for a new generation, students performed songs such as:  “Surfin USA,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” and “Stop! In the Name of Love” before an audience of family and friends.

Poetry In Voice/Les voix de la poésie recently announced the winners of its third annual poetry recitation competition, held at Toronto’s Isabel Bader Theatre. In the inaugural country-wide competition, students competed for $25,000 in prizes and school stipends.

Fleming School Set to Celebrate its Centennial -

Fleming Elementary will be inviting current students and older alumni to head back to school on Friday, May 31from 4 - 8 PM. In the early part of the evening, the school will host an Open House (from 4 -6 PM) which will include school tours,  displays and an assembly. A special Fleming video project, which was created by the entire student body just for this celebration, will be featured.

Scientist-in-Residence Program Receives $20,000 Cheque to Support Student Programming -

On Friday, May 3, students in grades 4 and 5 at Queen Mary Elementary School were experimenting with methods to clean water samples containing suspended particulate material. The week before, the classes had taken a field trip to Stanley Park where they got a first-hand look at the diversity of marine organisms in the intertidal zone.

On Monday evening, the Vancouver Board of Education Management and Coordinating Committee will discuss a recommendation from the Committee Chairperson and School Trustee, Mike Lombardi to initiate a Student Trustee Pilot Project for the next school year. Trustee Lombardi consulted with senior staff, legal counsel, and the Vancouver District Student Council Representatives to develop a draft policy and regulations

Laurier Students Build Planters with Help from Tupper Tech -
