Policy Manual

This manual contains the policies (reproduced in hard copy on white paper) of the Board of School Trustees. The major regulations intended to implement these policies are included also (reproduced on green paper), as are certain reference or "exhibit" documents that relate to policies or regulations (yellow paper).

Policy development in a modern, forward-looking school system is a dynamic, on-going process; new policies must be developed to respond to new issues and, as situations change, so must policies be revised. This is why the hard copy of the manual has a loose-leaf format; pages can be added and deleted without difficulty.

Each person holding a hard copy of this manual should make a diligent effort to keep it up to date as new policies, regulations, or exhibits are distributed by the Secretary Treasurer's Office. All copies of this manual are the property of the Vancouver school district and may, from time to time, be recalled for major changes or updates.

How the Manual is Organized

The manual is organized according to the classification system developed by the National School Boards Association (EPS/NSBA). The system has been adapted for use by the Vancouver school system and provides an efficient means of coding, filing, and finding important school documents.

There are 12 major classifications, each bearing an alphabetical code.

Subclassification under each heading is based on logical sequence and alphabetical subcoding. For an example of the subcoding system, examine the contents immediately following the division of Section A - Foundations and Basic Commitments.

The contents that follow the division for each major section present the classification system, section by section, and serve as tables of contents for each section or "chapter" of the manual.
