VanCity Idol - A Sell out Success

On Friday, May 6th, 2011 the Vancouver District Students Council staged the first VanCity Idol at Vancouver Technical Secondary School. Supported by VanCity Credit Union and Tom Lee Music, VanCity Idol featured 18 singers representing each of our secondary schools.  The talented singers sang with amazing confidence and poise electrifying the crowd of almost 600 students, parents and friends.  The audience roared its approval in a show of camaraderie and support for all the contestants, whether a young grade 8 boy or a seasoned grade 12 girl.

This year's winner, Nikki Hammond of Killarney Secondary School wowed the crowd with her amazing performance of "Poor Unfortunate Souls" from The Little Mermaid.  Katie Green from Lord Byng Secondary placed second, playing guitar and belting out "Traveling Soldier" by the Dixie Chicks.  In third place was Van Tech favourite Sarah Cantuba who with great stage presence sang When You Believe by Mariah Carey/Whitney  Huston.  All three girls were rewarded with scholarship and music prizes from our sponsors.  While the judges deliberated, the audience was treated to a performance by Canada's #1 Dance Crew - Now or Never and a special performance by local singer Gio Levy.

But the biggest winner was a local charity, KidStart an award winning prevention and diversion program for vulnerable kids.  All proceeds from VanCity Idol will benefit the charity.

Many thanks to all the members of the Vancouver District Students Council, especially the tireless efforts of our two main organizers President Michelle Pham and Communications Officer Joy Aguilar.  Also thanks to Aziza Win who co-emceed the show.  Our three judges, Carol Westdal, Mark Reid and Gio Levy had a tough job to do but managed to narrow the impressive performers down to the top 5.  We would also like to thank Principal Mrs. Brenda Burroughs of Van Tech for all her support and assistance.
