The past month has been very busy for VSB's Vancouver District Students' Council. On April 27 and May 4  was the VDSC's Second Annual VanCityIdol. VanCityIdol is a singing competition involving students from all 18 secondary schools in District 39. The event took place at Vancouver Technical Secondary. Idols competed in front of a panel of judges and a 700 member audience for the grand prizes of a $7,000 vocal talent scholarship, a Fender Guitar, several Recording Studio Packages, and other cash prizes.

In the early Spring, each secondary school held their own School's Idol Competition. The winners from each school 

became a part of the Main Events' Contestants. Weeks before the show, the contestants took part in bonding experiences - they were featured in the VanCityIdol Promo Video and attended a Vocal Training Bootcamp hosted by Tom Lee Music.

The Semi Finals of the competition took place on April 27. It featured a large group of extremely talented young singers. They sang their hearts out in a three hour event featuring student MC's, audience raffle draws, and amazing guest performances. Guest performers at the VanCityIdol Semis were Gentleman's Vibe (a local rap group), Swaggadelikz (a primary aged girls' dance crew), and FATE (a group of Secondary School dancers). Kate Kurdyak, Lord Byng Secondary, left the competition with one of the recording studio packages awarded to contestants. The eight contestants that moved onto the finals were from Gladstone, King George, Kitsilano, Vancouver Technical, Prince of Wales, Lord Byng, Magee, and Sir Winston Churchill Secondary Schools.

At the end of the day, the winner of the competition was Min Young Hwang (Grade 12 at Prince of Wales). Hwang took home a $7000 scholarship and VanCityIdol 2012! Jasmine Taviss (Churchill) and Kaitlyn Hansen-Boucher (Kitsilano) were named the runners up and awarded their prizes of recording studio time and a Fender Guitar. In a surprise introduction, the May 4 finals began with a collaborative cover by the eight finalists. They captivated the audience with a harmony to "We are Young" by FUN. The night was hosted by Kid Carson (local morning radio host) and featured guest performances by Lucky Aces (a 9 year old dance duo), Freshh (Youth dance crew and finalists in Canada's Got Talent), and Katie Green (One of last year's VanCityIdol winners).The Top five contestants were chosen by the panel of judges, who then handed the voting over to the audience.

VanCityIdol is focussed on showcasing the diversity of the vocal talent Vancouver's students have to offer. It is also a fantastic opportunity for a lot of young singers. Judges and Representatives from Record Labels and Musical Talent Academies come to watch our show every year. Even when an Idol doesn't win, they still have the chance to chat with the Reps and gain feedback.

The competition also doubled as a charitable event raising money for CLICK (Contributing to the Lives of Inner City Kids). CLICK funds Vancouver youth programs and services including: meal programs, safe and enriching after school programs, family literacy, sports for inner city teenagers, music and theatre programs, speech pathology, a golf skills program, and more.
