Fall Extravaganza Wows Crowd

This year's Fall Extravaganza was the third community event organized and iniated by the Engaging Neighbourhoods Initiative, a partnership between local secondary students (many of whom hail from David Thompson Secondary), UBC, South Vancouver Neighbourhood House, DTCST, Fraserview Boys and Girls Club, BC Housing at Orchard Park and Vancouver Middle Childhood Matters coordinator. The project is sponsored by the United Way.

Founded two years ago, the initiative empowers students to plan events like this fall's festival, which included food, games, arts and crafts activities, and entertainment. Organizers say the biggest draw to the Fall Extravaganza this year was the entertainment, which showcased youth talent in the community including dance teams, crazy backflip stunts, a choir, and seriously talented young singers.

The event took place at Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith Elementary. During the festival, tables were laden with free appetizers, snacks, lunch, desserts, and drinks. The school's gym was jammed with tables showcasing new crafts and reading brochures about services and fun places in the community. Performers dazzled crowds on the stage.
