At Tecumseh Family Literacy Night Every Child is a Winner

Tecumseh and Tecumseh Annex celebrated a very successful Family Literacy Night on Monday, Jan. 28th at the main school. Participants visited stations that included poetry writing, a graffiti wall, pop up books, illuminated letters and featured school bookmarks, a website survey, readers' theatre, story time, garden design and a salmon station designed by students.

Family Night 2

"The success of Family Literacy night was not only due to the participation of preschoolers, students, parents, and grandparents, but also the enthusiasm and excitement of the student leaders, volunteers, teachers and community partners running the stations," says Carrie Froese, VP at Tecumseh Elementary School.

According to Froese, community partners were enthusiastic about participating in the event. Canuck's Family Education Centre donated 200 books to ensure that every child had a book to take home. The evening was also attended by UBC professors Dr. Samia Khan and Dr. Hart Banack, who were busy running a station, learning about the community and answering questions about the Victoria- Fraserview UBC research study, The Knowledge Project.

Froese says the entire event was nicely summed up by one Grade 4 Tecumseh student who remarked, 'I liked how everyone got to be a winner."
