On Friday April 19, 2013, over 200 people gathered at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School to discuss the progress of the students and staff at the school.

"Around 120 support and teaching staff, 30 parents and 50 students met to find out what's good about the school and what needs to be changed," said vice-principal John Hunter. "It was all an exercise to formulate next year's school plan and setting a goal for the next school year."

Hunter explained how the discussion members were employing the appreciative inquiry method of organizational development, which focuses on increasing what the school does well rather than eliminating what it does badly.

Some of the topics discussed included: how technology can be used to improve student learning; what strategies can be employed to promote inclusivity in the learning process; how engaged are students in the learning process; what does an ideal classroom look like; and how to define success for students.

The discussion ran from 9 a.m. until noon, and after lunch, teachers from Churchill had their own workshop to discuss ways to optimize the learning experience for their students.
