Killarney Grade 12 Grad Heads to Ottawa as Parliamentary Page

Josh Fernandez was recently selected to serve as a Page in the House of Commons for this coming autumn's sitting of the house. Fernandez will be studying in Ottawa at the same time at the University of Ottawa where he'll focus on Modern Languages.

"I have worked with many students over the past 30 years and Josh is one of the best and most intelligent students I have ever worked with," said Killarney Principal Dave Derpak. "He is kind, polite and thoughtful. He has a great sense of family, is good with peers and respectful to his teachers."

Killarney staff say Fernandez's new job isn't a huge surprise given the past oratory awards he has won.

During his time at Killarney, he won the Canada-wide French speaking contest Concours D'Art Oratoire (held in Ottawa), the International Odd Fellows United Nations Speech Contest (held in New York) and the BC/Yukon Japanese Speech Competition (held in BC).

"To win multiple speech competitions in several languages, at the national level is an amazing accomplishment. This young man has a great future in front of him. All of the Killarney staff and community are proud of him," said Derpak.

Fernandez is one of only 40 pages selected nation-wide for the opportunity.
