VSB Ed Centre Gets Into Canadian Spirit With Flag Day

Last week, individuals and departments on the 3rd floor of the VSB Ed Centre celebrated National Flag of Canada Day in a big way.

Staff from the Planning, Facilities, Career Programs and IT departments, and the BCeSIS team came together on Thursday morning for coffee, maple leaf cookies (baked by ACE IT student chefs at David Thompson Secondary), Canadian trivia and a rousing rendition of 'O Canada'.

"Celebrations such as Flag Day are commonplace for people who work in schools, but not in the Ed Centre. Many people did not know Canadian Flag Day existed," says Karen Larsen, Career Education Coordinator.  "It's perfect timing with the Olympics taking place, we get to celebrate the success of our athletes while we honour our flag."

VSB Ed Centre staff also had a friendly decorating competition over the course of the week and the third floor was transformed into a red and white wonderland.

February 15 was declared National Flag of Canada Day in 1996. It marks the day in 1965 when the red and white maple leaf flag was first raised over Parliament Hill in Ottawa and in hundreds of communities across Canada.
Red and white were designated as Canada's official colours in 1921 by His Majesty King George V.
