Earlier this year, students from Tupper Tech built raised garden boxes for Sir Wilfrid Laurier Elementary School. The new garden was the five-year passion project of Laurier principal Janet Souther. And after the long, warm summer Laurier Elementary School's first crop was ready to be harvested.

This past weekend, parents, students, and teachers braved the rain and wind to harvest the garden's first crop and prepare the garden beds for the fall. Broccoli, kale, squash, beans, zucchini, and corn were in abundance, and students tilled the beds and transplanted raspberries, sunflowers, and garlic for fall.

"This is definitely a community garden," says Souther. "Our PAC committee and parents have done an amazing job."

Over the course of the afternoon, students learned about the different stages of a garden and tasted beans straight off the vine. One student commented that they "hated" tomatoes, to which Souther responded, "Ah, but there is nothing better than eating a tomato that you have planted, grown, and harvested yourself!"
