Byng Students Hear from Star Snowboarders About Effects of Climate Change

Over 250 Grade 10 Byng Secondary students got a chance to meet some superstar snowboarders and learn more about how climate change is impacting the sport they love in a special assembly that took place at the school in early October.

The students heard from David Carrier Porcheron and Megan Pischke, both of whom have been snowboarding for over 17 years. Porcheron has been featured on the Weather Channel's popular show "Epic Conditions" while Pischke has been highlighted during her performances at the X Games.

Both athletes stood in front of students to talk about how they had witnessed firsthand the impact of climate change. Pischke talked about how the retreat of the permafrost layer in her native Greenland has led to new challenges for burials while Porcheron explained that over the past 15 years he's watched the gradual, but relentless retreat of glacier ice in Whistler/Blackcomb.

The event was sponsored by Protect our Winters, a non-profit group whose mission is to engage and mobilize the winter sports community to lead the fight against climate change.
