Laurier Elementary students and recent Laurier graduates came together to unveil two newly painted library posts at the school. The posts were designed and painted by students with the help and guidance of local artist Mila Kostic, who volunteered her time mentoring the students in mural techniques. 

"I had a blast working with students," says Kostic. "They brought a lot of energy and fresh ideas into this project. I also want to thank Janet Souther, Principal and Alanna Wong, Teacher-Librarian for all the help and support on this project and for the friendship as well."

The posts have a number of different and dynamic images which incorporate First Nations and literacy themes.

"We were so happy to have Mila volunteer to help our student painters," says Janet Souther, Principal at Laurier Elementary. "They had such a wonderful time working with her, learning about colour mixing -we had only the three primary colours as well as black and white. With those colours we created texture with the paint."

Students who had worked on the murals were invited to sign their names on the poles and enjoy some celebratory cake.

"It was also lovely to have the original designers here to see their designs come to life. It was wonderful community project to create a lasting legacy in our school library," says Souther.
