Windermere Life Skills Students Compete in Taekwondo Tournament
On October 12, 2014, Windermere Life Skills students participated in the BC Taekwondo Cup held at SFU. The tournament was hosted by DSA Taekwondo, a local taekwondo school run by Darius Andaya, whose three eldest children attend Windermere Secondary.
Grade 11 student Manuel Andaya and Grade 12 student Dana Andaya volunteer twice a month to instruct Life Skills students in taekwondo, along with their father. Their younger brother Darryl along with two other Life Skills classmates Teresa Lowe and Kenneth Tran have been training to compete in the newly created "Challenger" division of the tournament.
This division, created by Andaya, is intended to highlight the strengths and abilities of students who have special needs, particularly intellectual disabilities. The tournament opened with these students demonstrating taekwondo forms that they learned and practiced. Darryl Andaya, Lowe and Tran placed first, second and third respectively. Spectators said their performance was inspiring.
Vice Principal Alison Ogden says now she expects many Life Skills students will be equally inspired to practice their lessons from DSA Taekwondo with the hopes of building upon this great success.
