Tupper Hosts Municipal Debate

On Tuesday, November 4, close to one hundred Tupper students were thrilled to have a visit by a wide range of candidates from different municipal parties, all seeking election (and re-election) during this year's municipal election. The event was held on Tuesday, November 4 and orchestrated by Tupper teacher Colin McLean's debate club.

During the 45 minute long mock mayoral debate, students got a chance to ask candidates a range of questions including why students should support their party's platforms. McLean says the debate definitely got students thinking about how municipal government interacts with their daily lives.

"Quite a few students stayed after the debate to speak to the candidates and a few of my own students asked me questions about the roles and responsibilities of the municipal government in contrast to the provincial and federal levels," he says.

McLean says the candidates all honoured Tupper by coming and their presence communicated the importance of participating in the political process.

The debate was moderated by Tupper Grade 12 student Anika Jang.
