Vancouver School Board and Burnaby School District marched together in the 2017 Vancouver Pride parade to demonstrate their commitment to diversity and inclusivity.

The combined group made their way on foot with a float around the route of the parade, which celebrates lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and two-spirit (LGBTQ2S+) culture and pride.

Selma Smith, VSB's district principal of social emotional learning and prevention, said they also received plenty of support from students, staff and other community members packed along the parade route.

"Thank you to our VSB staff, students and families who represented the VSB along with Burnaby School District and to all who came to support Vancouver's 39th Pride parade," she said.

VSB has one of Canada's most progressive policies regarding sexual orientation and gender identity. The district is committed to creating inclusive schools that provide a safe and positive learning environment for all students and employees.

This past school year, VSB has been working in collaboration with nine school districts to share ideas and to improve practices towards creating safer and more inclusive school environments for all students. More information about this project can be found at: www.sogieducation.org
