Celebrating women's right to vote

Killarney Secondary students used their creative skills to bring the history of women's suffrage to life in marking the 100th anniversary of women's right to vote.

They used slam poetry, film, music and theatre to recognize the occasion before 400 attendees at the Vancouver Law Courts, including Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada Beverley McLachlin, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada Jody Wilson-Raybould and B.C.'s Attorney General and Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton.

In B.C., an April 2017 amendment to the Provincial Elections Act confirmed the right of women to vote, although it was not until 1960 that First Nations people were granted the unconditional right to vote in federal elections.
