Trades Discovery BCIT

The Vancouver School Board partners with BCIT to offer the SkilledTradesBC (STBC) Explore Trades Sampler program called Trades Discovery General. Where appropriate, students could also consider applying for the Trades Discovery for Women intakes.

Program Details

This program runs for 16 weeks at BCIT Burnaby, with some classes at the Annacis Island (Delta), Aerospace Technology (Richmond), and Marine (North Vancouver) campuses.  All campuses are accessible by transit.

Classes hours run from 7:30 am to 2:00 pm. Some sessions may be scheduled outside of these established hours (as early as 7:00 am or afternoon shifts from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm).

Please note that students must be in grades 10 or 11 to apply for this program. Grade 12 students may apply if seats remain available. For more details on program dates, students should contact their counsellors, or email careerprograms@vsb.bc.ca.

Course Content

The Trades Discovery programs are designed to allow participants extensive access to the available trades and technical training at BCIT campuses. These highly practical and relevant training programs prepare participants to successfully enter and complete trades/technical training or seek apprenticeship.

Students gain hands-on experience in approximately 15 different trades disciplines. Some examples of activities are: lay out and fabrication, general piping, carpentry framing, welding, wiring and working on mechanical systems in automobiles, aircraft, and heavy equipment.

The programs include two weeks of unpaid work experience, partnering education with industry and the community. Students will be trained and certified in the following:

  • Lift Truck Operator (forklift training)
  • Mental Health First Aid
  • Occupational First Aid Level One
  • Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS)
