Learning about the rhythmic culture and the diversity of African Drumming
During the last week of February, every class at Livingstone Elementary had the opportunity to dance and drum with the talented trio: Marion Landers, Albert St. Albert Smith and Sam Smith/Maestre Lua Camara.
Very much a purification event, students were guided by the guest trio as they tried their hands at playing drums. They also learned about the diversity of African drumming and particularly about the drums from Ghana. Inspired by the rhythmic beat, students also danced together, led by trio member, Marion Landers.
For students, this type of activity is far more than a chance to learn about a new instrument. It’s learning about different cultures and traditions. It’s also learning about the importance of community connections and building relationships in different ways. It was also a chance to have fun and experience joy of drumming and dancing together!
Thank-you to Livingstone PAC that supported the collaborative and fun learning experience.
