Dear DLG Families,

We hope everyone is enjoying a wonderful start to the school year. It has been fantastic to see students settling into their classrooms, reconnecting with friends, and building new relationships within our school community.

Professional Development Day - Monday, September 21

This Monday is our first Non-Instructional (Professional Development) Day of the school year. There will be no school for students as staff participate in professional learning and collaboration activities.

Please mark the following Non-Instructional Days on your calendar for the 2026-2027 school year:

Thank You for Attending Open Houses

Several classes held Open Houses this past week and there are some happening this week. Thank you to our teachers for organizing these opportunities and to the many families who attended and will attend. We hope that meaningful connections were made between home and school as we work together to support student learning throughout the year.

Safety Drills at DLG

On Friday, we held our first fire drill of the school year. We are pleased to report that approximately 500 people, including students, staff, and the toddlers and preschoolers from the daycare on site, were safely out of the building and accounted for within six minutes. This is an excellent response time, especially for a school community of our size.

Throughout the school year, we will conduct a variety of safety drills to help ensure everyone knows what to do in the event of an emergency. These include six fire drills, two earthquake drills, one lockdown drill, and one hold and secure drill. Families can expect approximately one drill each month. While we hope to never face these situations in real life, regular practice helps students and staff respond calmly and safely should an unexpected emergency occur. We prepare for difficult situations so that we can all be safe when faced with the unexpected.

Digital Safety Resources for Families

As a reminder, students should not have personal digital devices at school. Devices should remain at home or stored in backpacks during the school day.

We recognize that children continue to engage with digital technology at home, and families often ask for resources regarding online safety and digital citizenship. The Vancouver School Board recommends a number of reputable resources, including MediaSmarts, Canada's Centre for Digital Media Literacy.

Families may wish to explore their parent resources and video library, which offer practical information and discussion topics for parents and children:

Many of the videos are helpful for parents and are also worthwhile to watch with your child and discuss together.

School Fees

In British Columbia, the essential components of education are funded by the province. However, schools may charge fees for enrichment activities, optional programs, and consumable materials.

This coming week, families will receive an email from the DLG office regarding school fees. Please read the message carefully, including information about the Vancouver School Board's hardship policy, which supports families who may require financial assistance.

PAC News

Thank you to everyone who attended our first PAC meeting last Tuesday. We were thrilled to see such a strong turnout and appreciate the support of our parent community.

The PAC continues to play an important role in both fundraising and building community at David Lloyd George Elementary. Planned activities for this year include:

• Family dances
• Movie nights (the first movie night is scheduled for October 30)
• Cookie fundraisers
• Holiday-themed fundraising initiatives

The PAC also organizes a lunch delivery program for interested families. Please note that this program is organized and managed directly by the PAC and is not operated through the school.
