Dear Parents/Guardians of Grade 9 Students,

Take Our Kids to Work Day (TOKTWD) is a one-day job shadow event, occurring nation-wide during Canada Career Week and is planned for Wednesday, November 6th.

All Grade 9 students are encouraged to spend a day at work with a parent, relative, adult friend, or volunteer host if possible. The student’s evaluation of this experience and supplemental assignment will count towards their Career Education 9 completion. This assignment will be posted on the Grade 9 Teams and is able to be completed and required whether a student participates in TOKTWD or not.

The Take Our Kids to Work Day initiative has three main objectives:

  • To offer students a view of the work world and to foster an understanding of its demands and opportunities.
  • To allow students to see their parents/guardians or other adult volunteer hosts in different roles and to understand what they do to support a family.
  • To emphasize that education goes far beyond the classroom walls and that the preparation of younger generations for the future is a community responsibility.

Attendance and Important Dates:

It will be up to students and families together to plan for this day. Grade 9 students will NOT be required to attend school if they are participating in this event; their day will consist entirely of being at a work site. Students who do not participate at a worksite will still be expected to attend school and will be supervised while engaged in quiet study.

If participating, the attached permission form must be completed and returned to Hamber’s main office before October 31st, 2024.

The Career 9 assignment for all grade 9s to complete will be posted on students’ Grade 9 Teams by the first week of November and due by Friday, November 15th, 2024.

More information about TOKTWD can be found here: https://www.studentscommission.ca/events/tokw2024/

Your efforts will help ensure that your child enjoys the benefits of a rich and practical learning experience.

Thank you,
