Southlands Elementary School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme World School. All students at Southlands participate in the Primary Years Program (PYP), which is an inquiry-based, transdisciplinary programme that is designed to foster the development of the whole child. PYP students are encouraged to develop the ten attributes of the Learner Profile.
"The aim of the IB Programme is to develop internationally minded people who help to create a better and more peaceful world." (IBO.org 2013)
Structured, concept-based inquiry is the main form of learning in the PYP programme at Southlands. Our programme of inquiry is organized around six transdisciplinary themes, which are repeated each year. Students are supported to develop knowledge and conceptual understandings, as well as the five Approaches to Learning skill sets. As a result of their learning, students develop the ability and desire to take meaningful action that makes a difference. The PYP integrates the British Columbia Ministry of Education curriculum into a framework of inquiry with a global perspective.
