Trafalgar Terry Fox Run 2024
Dear Trafalgar Parents/Caregivers:
We are excited to announce that our school will be proudly taking part in the 2024 Terry Fox School Run, scheduled to take place on Thursday, September 19, 2024. Please ensure that you have completed the online permission and consent forms for 2024-2025 as the Terry Fox Run consent is a part of this and important in order to be able to participate.
We hope that we can continue to show the great strength and resiliency of our school community with your support of one of our greatest Canadian heroes, Terry Fox. Let’s all use Terry’s message of hope and strength to inspire us to help as well. Students can contribute with energy, effort, and enthusiasm, and parents are welcome to help through a financial donation to our school fundraising effort for the Terry Fox Foundation.
Terry’s Story
Terry Fox was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and raised in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. An active teenager involved in many sports, Terry was only 18 years old when he was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) and forced to have his right leg amputated above the knee in 1977.
While in hospital, Terry was so overcome by the suffering of other cancer patients, many of them young children that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He ran close to 42 kilometers a day through Canada’s Atlantic Provinces, Quebec and Ontario. However, on September 1st, after 143 days and 5,373 kilometers, Terry was forced to stop running outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario because cancer had appeared in his lungs. An entire nation was stunned and saddened. Terry passed away on June 28, 1981, at the age 22. Every year, we support his goals, run like Terry, and raise money for cancer research.
The Terry Fox Foundation has created an online fundraising page for our school for this year’s Terry Fox event!
