English and ELL

The study of English begins with 26 letters and ends with the letter “I” not “Z” as most would believe. English is more than grammar lessons, poetry, short stories, novels and Shakespeare. English is the study and practice of the left and right sides of the brain because it demands an ability to examine language in great detail in a logical sequence (the right side) and requires a creative and sensitive understanding of human nature and experience (the left side). Think about it, what does “I” have to do with you and me?

You want answers to what makes the world go ‘round, what makes life a box of chocolates, what makes it tick?  (These are called metaphors and clichés; ask your English teachers what they mean.)

Read Romeo and Juliet, The Great Gatsby, and Of Mice and Men to learn about love, ambition, sacrifice and more.

English is really the study of human nature through the use of convenient symbols, called letters that allow us to express ourselves in the plainest and most subtle ways. That’s why everyone is required to take English right through to grade 12.

The English and ELL Department is the largest and most diverse one in the school offering courses at every level of language: Reception and Transitional classes in ELL for those new to English, advanced courses in Venture and IB Language A1 for those interested in intense studies in literature, and for those seeking a more practical approach to language, Communications courses are available, too. There’s even Literacy and Bridge English for junior students who need to study in a smaller and more intimate environment. Of course for everyone else, there is regular English from 8 to 12. Check out the Britannia Course Calendar for the English or ELL course best suited for you.
