*Library Book check out procedures will be different this school year due to COVID19.  Use a provided bookmark, with your name on it, to check out a book in person at school.  Line up at the Library circulation desk and physically distance by standing on a blue line marked on the floor.  When at the Library circulation desk please lean your book selections against the plexiglass with the VSB stickers facing the Librarian and your books will be scanned through the plexiglass by the Librarian.  Book loans are for two weeks and may be renewed.  Please return your books as soon as you are done reading them to the return bin in the Library.  Thank you!

Champlain Heights Community Elementary School Library is here to inspire you to enjoy reading, and to even inspire you to write a book of your own!  (There is a bin in the Library of student author books if you would like to share a copy of your self published writing with us!)

We would like to welcome Weir Elementary School students and staff to our learning community!  Their school is undergoing seismic renovations.  Welcome Weir!

Champlain Heights Community Elementary School was designed by the famous Canadian architect Arthur Erickson who also designed the U.B.C. Anthropology Museum, Simon Fraser University, the B.C. Law Courts and Robson Square.

The Champlain Library Learning Commons was designed like an Indigenous big house of knowledge-learning and cultural exchange.  It is circular in shape, with a skylight window in the middle of the roof and it has a grand entrance hallway from the front entrance of the school.  It was designed to be the heart of the school, to provide a safe and nurturing community for all of the students and "classroom families" that surround it.  A new rectangular wing was later added to the school design, and creates a learning space which "reaches out" and connects to the natural forest park area beside the school.  The new wing provides many more classroom spaces for the growing Champlain Heights Community.  

To celebrate the natural environment surrounding Champlain Heights Community School, the School PAC a number of years ago sponsored the addition of Garden Benches and Garden Boxes around the school, and updated the School Playground Area.  

Six Food Garden Boxes are located outside the Library's backdoor.  We recently received funding to update our Garden Boxes, Garden Area and Outdoor Learning Programming from a VSB Outdoor Learning Grant, a Jane Goodall Institute of Canada Roots and Shoots Grant and a VSB Sustainability Grant.  We love our Garden and our fresh air learning experiences!  Go PlantTEAM@Champlain!  We celebrate our Library Learning Commons Garden with you - our students, staff, parents and our Champlain Community!

For many years, Champlain students have grown food, flowers and Indigenous plants to celebrate their desire to feel connected to the earth, to the environment, and to the goal of creating a sustainable, peaceful world. Each year the Champlain Gr. 7 Grad Class ceremonially plants a tree together on the school property.

Thank You to our PAC for graciously donating a 2020 book-fund gift to the Library to purchase new books on Gardening, Ecology and Youth Leaders in the Environmental Movement.  We have purchased many new books such as books by and about the Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg, who visited Vancouver on Friday Oct. 25, 2019 during a student-led climate change rally at the Vancouver Art Gallery, organized by the Vancouver Youth Group The Sustainabiliteens.  Greta Thunberg, 16 years old at the time,  spoke passionately to the very large crowd and said that "the energy of youth to help with the climate crisis is unstoppable".

Students can then sign in using their student number and password.   

Staff and students can search their book history, renew their books and also place a hold on a book that they would like to read.

There are two search engines to choose from when searching for a book in our V.S.B. Library System:  Destiny Discover and Destiny Back Office.  One way to look for a book is to look for categories of books until you find a book you would like to read.  Destiny Back Office allows you to look up sub-locations of books and then if you press enter you will see all the books in that category, and this will even help you find the location of the book in the Library. 

Library books are checked out at school by our Teacher Librarians.  Book loans are for two weeks.
