Salmonoids in the Classroom

Salmon Tank

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is pleased to support salmon incubation in our school. Raising salmon in the classroom is an opportunity to teach students to understand, respect and protect freshwater, estuarine and marine ecosystems, and to recognize how all humans are linked to these complex environments. This year, Mr. Patrick, Div. 3 grade 5/6 and Ms. Wilson, Div. 12 grade 1/2 have tanks in their classrooms with coho salmon. The salmon have been raised from eggs and will be released in a stream at Spanish Banks as fry. The students are learning about the different stages of the salmon, how the salmon is an important part of West Coast Indigenous culture and what we need to do to preserve our salmons' habitats. A number of classes have also taken part in this learning.
