District courses: History of African Descent in B.C. 12 and the Queer and Trans History of B.C. 12

Calling all Grade 11 and 12 students! There will be two District courses operating in the 2024/25 school year: History of African Descent in B.C. 12 and Queer & Trans History of B.C. 12. Because these are District courses, they are open to all Grade 11 and 12 students within VSB – you do not have to be a student at the host school to enrol.
General questions and answers for both courses:
Q: When do the courses take place?
A: Once per week, after school.
Q: Are the courses online or in-person?
A: In-person.
Q: Who can register?
A: These are courses with unique curriculum designed for students in Grades 11/12. All VSB secondary students can register.
Q: Am I a good fit?
A: These courses are a good fit for students with an interest in history, a desire to connect with students across the District, and who are committed to attending class.
Q: Does this count as an elective?
A: Yes!

A: Black Culture, African empires, West Indian dialects, Beyoncé, Afrofuturism, rest, James Brown, Maya Angelou, Art, Architecture, graphic novels, stomping the yard, the list goes on!

A: To center Black joy, resilience and achievements.
Q: What do we do?
A: Field trips and guest speakers, project-based learning, online dialogue and seminars.

Q: What do we talk about?
A: Different identities, movements and people in 2SLGBTQIAP+ history. We’ll look at language, dance, music and more!
Q: Why do we talk about it?
A: To center trans and queer joy, resilience and achievements.
Q: What do we do?
A: Field trips and guest speakers, project-based learning, online dialogue and seminars.
