In 1908, a school building on this site was originally opened. In 1920, the school was named "Edith Cavell Elementary" after a British nurse and heroine named Edith Louisa Cavell (1865-1915).   She is celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from both sides without discrimination and for helping some 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during the First World War by giving them jobs in her hospital, finding clothing and organizing safe passage into Holland.
