VDSC’s Twelfth Annual CANley Cup

1st place Canley Cup

VDSC Co-President Mackenzie Chung, Grade 11 at Eric Hamber, VDSC Co-President Tiffany Tang, Grade 12 at Vancouver Technical, Student Trustee Mia Liu, Grade 12 at Lord Byng, and Secretary Arabella Mew, Grade 11 at Eric Hamber announce this year's CANley Cup winners in a guest writer piece.

With winter break right around the corner, the season of giving has started! With help from ambitious representatives from VSB secondary schools, the Vancouver District Students’ Council (VDSC) kicked off the CANley Cup.

One of VDSC’s most treasured initiatives, the CANley Cup is a district-wide fundraising competition where schools work to raise money and non-perishable items for the Vancouver community. The food and money raised will provide families, seniors, breakfast and lunch programs with nourishment for the holiday season.

This year, schools were able to donate all proceeds to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank and partner agencies, or other local organizations. For example, Magee Secondary chose to donate to Project Hastings, and collections from Vancouver Technical stayed at the school to support families within the school community.

To promote the CANley Cup, the VDSC encouraged schools to hold friendly competitions. Schools hosted various promotional events, including “Teacher VS Student” sports games, hot chocolate sales, movie nights, and spirit weeks; many schools offered bubble tea, pizza parties, and even the opportunity to pie their teacher in the face for donations!

As anxiously anticipated, the CANley trophy was awarded to the school with the most cans per person ratio. Participating schools fundraised a total of 213k cans across the District this year, with first place going to Point Grey Secondary School with an astounding 55 cans per person. Second place went to Vancouver Technical Secondary, and Prince of Wales Secondary obtained third! The VDSC was incredibly honoured to host the CANley Cup event this year; the results show that students can accomplish great feats when they unite as a school community.

The VDSC is beyond grateful for the enthusiasm shared by students in all of VDSC’s recent endeavours. In the new year, VDSC looks forward to furthering inter-school relations through events such as Sister School Switch and Arts Gala
