Introduction

Mandarin Introductory 11 is a course designed for students who have little to no knowledge of the Chinese language. The course content is a combination of Mandarin 9 and Mandarin 10, which covers essential learning standards in an accelerated time frame in order to prepare students for Mandarin 11. Students will develop basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through the study of various materials that are related to their daily life.

Both simplified and traditional Chinese characters will be introduced in this course. And students can choose to focus on either one or both versions. The Hanyu Pinyin Romanization system will be taught and reinforced to help students learn the spoken language.

Where does this course fit?

  • Pre-requisite: There is no prerequisite.
  • Upon the completion of Intro Mandarin 11, students will continue with Mandarin 11.
  •  Graduation Status: Elective for graduation

Unit

Description

Chinese Language

In this unit, students will learn the history of Chinese language, including the origin of Chinese characters, the introduction of Chinese pronunciation and pinyin system, and useful online tools to help them master the language.

Greetings

In this unit, students will learn how to greet people, introduce themselves, and count from 1 to 100 in Mandarin.

Family

In this unit, students will learn how to say and introduce each family member. They will be able to write a paragraph about their family photo.

Date, Time, and Weather

In this unit, students will learn how to read the calendar, tell the time, and talk about the weather.

Classroom

In this unit, students will learn every item in the classroom.

My Daily Routine

In this unit, students will be able to talk and write a paragraph about their daily schedule, and their favourite subjects.

Hobbies

In this unit, students will explore different sports and things they like to do on the weekend.

Clothing

In this unit, students will learn different colours and clothes, and describe what people are wearing.
