Templeton students compete at FIRST Robotics competition

FIRST Robotics Comp

From February 26 to March 1, students from around the world gathered at the Pacific Coliseum. With their robots in tow, it was time to compete in the 2025 FIRST Robotics Competition!

Two robotics teams from Templeton Secondary proudly represented VSB: The Vancouver Rainstorms and the Puddle Jumpers, an all-girls robotics team.

The competition was an exciting opportunity for students who have an interest in robotics and technology – and for those who want to try something new!

“Our team has grown a lot, especially in the last few years. It’s really nice to have an all-female team,” says Jessica Kong, member of the Puddle Jumpers. “I was very introverted when I first started but having all girls on the team really helped me. I’m interested in a future career in science.”

Each team worked together to design and build a robot before bringing it into the arena. Once the alarm sounded, the robots were off! Each team was scored based on their robot’s speed, efficiency and ability to complete the skills course.

Through cheers and applause, the spirit of the arena was in full swing.

“When you build a robot, you get to see all of your hard work and dedication be realized through the competition,” says Sahi Noukoussi, a member of the Vancouver Rainstorms.

Helen McGregor, superintendent, cheered on VSB students at the event. She also took time to head into “the pit,” where students adjusted their robots in-between matches. While there, students shared what this opportunity meant to them.

“It’s an amazing competition and a great opportunity to have,” says Amelia Davies, another member of the Puddle Jumpers. “There aren’t too many schools in our area that get to go, and I’m glad to be a part of it.”

The competition was all about teamwork, STEAM-based learning and developing new skills. The Puddle Jumpers and the Vancouver Rainstorms worked hard, solved problems and overcame challenges. Both teams are a great example of what can be achieved through collaboration and determination.
