Shelf Reading

If the schedule has you down for a #3 or #4 job you are "shelf reading".
No, this does not mean that you are reading books on the shelves :)
Shelf Reading means that you are making sure that the books on the shelves are in EXACT ORDER.

Where do you start?

The "Shelf Reading" sheets are posted at the circulation desk just beneath the photos of our club members).

Check the sheet to see where to begin.

#3 Job: SHELF READING THE FICTION COLLECTION including Easy & Paperback spinners)

#4 Job: SHELF READING NON-FICTION COLLECTON (000 - 999)

What do you do?

  • Shelf reading is a physical job. You should be handling the books. Don't just look at them with your hands in your pockets.
  • Pull books forward to make sure that none of the books have fallen behind others.
  • The books should be flush against the front part of the wooden shelf.
  • If books are too tight (i.e. the shelf is completely filled up) move some books to the shelf above or below, wherever there is space.
  • There should be some space between the bookend and the end of the shelf.  (At least 6" or 15 cm)
  • All shelves should have bookends on them.

In summary, the shelves should look neat and tidy.
This is probably the most boring job you will ever do,
but it is also the most important!

Think about it ... If the books are not in order, how will anyone find what they are looking for?
After all, what's the use of having the books if no one can find them?
Remember what you learned about Shelving materials?

  • Non-Fiction books are arranged in number order [000 - 999]
  • Easy / Fiction / Paperbacks / Picture Books are all organized in alphabetical order, by author's last name.
  • Graphic Novels may be arranged in alphabetical order or by DEWEY order (by number).

IF AT ANY TIME YOU ARE CONFUSED, OR YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO ARRANGE BOOKS,

PLEASE TALK WITH MS. BOMBINO
She would love to show you how to shelf read.

And remember, this is about quality, not quantity. Just make sure that the books you shelf read are in order.

And finally ...

Always check the top shelf (the display shelf) for each unit.  It should have a book on display.
If it is empty, each time you shelf read a section, please pick a new book to put on display.
Take a moment and find a book with an attractive or interesting cover ...
something that will encourage students to take a look. (Note: The bookend is there to make sure the book is stable and does not fall on the floor
and get damaged.)

WHEN YOU HAVE READ ALL OF THIS INFORMATION,

EMAIL MS. BOMBINO WITH THE ANSWER TO THESE QUESTIONS:
1) Where can you find extra bookends?
2) There are 2 sized of bookends. The large ones are used on the Fiction & Non-Fiction     shelves. Where are the small ones used?
