Indigenous Education

“Education got us into this mess, and education will get us out of it.” – Hon. Murray Sinclair

Murray Sinclair’s quote continues to guide us in education, helping us move forward in a good way. Education is about coming together, sharing stories, and acknowledging the history of our country. At Gladstone, we strive to ensure that all voices are heard and respected, fostering an environment where everyone can learn from one another and move forward in a good way. By embracing diverse perspectives, we create a space for understanding and growth for all members of our community.

Gladstone captures the essence of a young mind’s journey, with each room reflecting the history of the students and educators who’ve inhabited it. For Indigenous students, one of these spaces is the "Sacred Space," where they can explore and express their culture through practices like crafting, baking, and healing. This space offers a sense of safety and unity when students might feel disconnected in a larger classroom setting.

Our Indigenous Education Teacher (IET) creates a safe, supportive space where Indigenous learners feel seen and heard, and where cultural teachings are integrated into their school experience. Our Indigenous Education Enhancement Worker (IEW) collaborates with our IET and other educators to create opportunities for Indigenous students to engage in cultural practices like carving, beading, and many other practices.
