Game on! VSB students participate in accessible sports during the inaugural OneAbility Games

OneAbility Games

From May 13-17, 2026, students from across the lower mainland participated in the inaugural OneAbility Games at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

The Games are an accessible event that invites K-12 students to participate in various adaptive sports, often for the first time! Students also had the chance to learn from competitive athletes from the disability sport community.

OneAbility Games offers two streams of sport: The PLAY stream and the ACHIEVE stream. While the ACHIEVE stream is designed for elite, high-level competition, the PLAY stream is designed for school-age participants. PLAY also offers supportive programming at schools and communities to help students develop the skills and confidence to play at the Games.

During the event, students had the opportunity to participate in a variety of accessible sports, including:

  •  Lacrosse
  • Soccer
  • Wheelchair and adapted basketball
  • Athletics
  • Floorball
  • Sitting volleyball

Several VSB students joined this fun-filled day of sports, learning and community, including the Learning Assistance/Life Skills (LALS) class at Killarney Secondary.

“It was a well-organized, fun and empowering event. The students loved trying several adaptive sports like wheelchair basketball, lacrosse, track and soccer,” says Anna-Lisa Singer, LALS teacher at Killarney. “The opening ceremonies were a celebration of diverse abilities and some of the students got pictures with Fin, the Canucks mascot. It was a wonderful and memorable day!”

Advancing accessibly is an important part of VSB’s commitment to students, staff and families. Participating in accessible events like this are one of the many ways this commitment takes shape. Learn more about how VSB is advancing accessibility on our website.
