Where we are and where we will go: the stages of a gradual return to full in-class instruction

| Categories: Our People, COVID-19

Following Premier John Horgan’s announcement of BC’s Restart Plan this week, which aims to allow a little normalcy as we continue fighting the spread of COVID-19, Superintendent of Schools, Suzanne Hoffman, shares details of a measured and phased approach in progression toward all students eventually being back in classrooms in the District.

In her latest video update, Hoffman talks about five phases of instruction - with stage five as the suspension of all in-class instruction for all grades and all students, and stage one being a return to full in-class instruction. She explains the District is currently in stage four, where children of essential service workers are currently at some school sites as well as students with exceptional learning needs in small groups. Health and safety protocols are in place.

Hoffman explains the District is contemplating a move to stage three before the end of this school year. Stage three would look to have kindergarten to Grade 12 students return to schools, with a focus initially on kindergarten to Grade 5 learners. Hoffman recognizes there are many questions from parents on how it will be implemented.

In the days ahead, we will work very closely with our various partners, teachers, and administrators to see what that might look like in our schools,” Hoffman says. She asks for patience as complex logistics are worked out and next steps are adaptedHoffman adds guidelines of the Provincial Health Officer will be followed.

Hoffman reiterates the commitment to health and safety, communication and making connections, as well as adapting for continuation of learning.

She ends her message with an emphasis that staff at the District truly care“We are very committed to doing right for children. This Mental Health Week, Hoffman highlights the importance of taking care of ourselves and each other.
