Highlights: policy and governance committee meeting – September 6

The Vancouver School Board standing committee on policy and governance held its first meeting of the 2023-2024 school year on Wednesday, September 6, 2023. More details can be found in agenda package or by viewing the live stream recording.

The agenda for the meeting included an update about the reimagined School Liaison Officer (SLO) program being implemented this school year and an information regarding VSB’s advocacy committee.

Trustee-members of the committee along with stakeholder representatives were informed that an MOU was signed between VSB and the Vancouver Police Department (VDP) prior to the students’ return to school. Details included information about how the program was revised, officer assignments and the program’s purpose: to enhance the safety of schools for students, their families and staff. The roles of officers along with those of school-based administrators and school-based staff was also discussed. The committee was also informed that a steering committee will monitor and oversee the program, and that an independent third-party will provide a review of the program that may yield areas for improvement.

Following, trustee Mah shared an update about work to reactivate VSB’s advocacy committee. She noted work on a revised draft terms of reference and informed stakeholder representatives in attendance their members will be invited to join the committee. In addition, trustee Mah noted that a number of projects will be examined by the committee this school year, along with the development of an advocacy plan.
