Mini School Programs FAQs

What are the Mini School Programs?

The Vancouver School District Mini School Programs provide opportunities for enrichment for students who are residents of Vancouver, are able to work at an above-average or Proficient level, are highly motivated and would benefit from a learning environment with highly motivated peers.

What are the requirements for application to a Mini School Program in Grade 8?

Students must first apply to the District Registry and then apply to each program separately.  See each program's website for details about their specific application process.  For some programs, application forms are available online, and others may be picked up at the school where the program is offered.

How many Mini School Programs can I apply to?

Grade seven students may apply for as many Mini School Programs as they wish.  Through the District Registry, students identify their top three choice programs.

How many times can I register on the District Registry?

Each student may register once on the District Registry, which is open for several weeks to allow students time to gather information and enter it accurately. Students and families are reminded that they must apply for each Mini School Program separately from the District Registry.

When will I hear if I am accepted?

First offers of acceptance will be emailed or telephoned at the end of February.  Second offers of acceptance will be sent out in March.

What should I do if I am offered a placement in a program?

If you are offered a placement in a program, you will be given a deadline to reply with your acceptance of that offer.  Students may accept one offer only.  It is also courteous to inform the program if you decide not to accept.

What should I do if I am not offered a placement in a program?

If you have not received an offer on the first offer date, you may still be offered a placement as the second offer process unfolds in early March.  You must reply then by the given deadline with your acceptance. It is also courteous to inform the program if you decide not to accept.

Where can I find my PEN number?

PEN (Personal Education Numbers) are nine-digit numbers issued by the Ministry of Education that identify each student in BC public and independent schools. You can find your PEN on your report cards, through the Ministry of Education, or by contacting your school's office. VSB students can locate their PEN number here.
