East Portion of Bruce Site Surplus
Community Update: Bruce Elementary School Site
At the public Board meeting on October 1, 2025, the Vancouver School Board (VSB) shared its decision to end the process of looking at whether the eastern part of the Bruce Elementary site should be declared surplus. This means no further steps will be taken to subdivide or dispose of that part of the property.
In September 2023, the Board decided to pause community engagement about the possible surplus declaration for a portion of the Bruce Elementary site. This pause allowed time to update enrolment projections, so the Board could better understand how recent changes to City of Vancouver zoning and new provincial housing initiatives might affect future student enrolment.
In June 2025, updated enrolment projections were shared at a public committee meeting. Based on this analysis, long-term enrolment forecasts do not support subdividing the school field. Current and projected enrolment at Bruce and nearby schools indicate that the Bruce site should stay as it is. Although the site layout technically allows for subdivision, benefits are now considered minimal. In addition, subdividing the property could limit future changes to support education needs in the future
