Superintendent’s Update
At every regular public Board meeting, superintendent McGregor recognizes those in our school community who have profound impacts on students with the Superintendent’s Tribute. This month she recognized the Geoff Pearmain, grounds supervisor for his unwavering commitment to creating inclusive and culturally responsive learning environments.
McGregor’s update also highlighted activities throughout the summer months as well as the care and attention of staff in supporting students as they settle into schools with the return of regular classes. She also noted VSB staff work to create awareness about cyber security with students and staff as October marks cyber security month. McGregor also noted the creation of a new information hub on VSB’s website for students’ families and the broader community, as well as other avenues for information and engagement.
Board business
The Board received a report from the education plan committee and approved the Framework for Enhanced Student Learning annual report for submission to the Ministry of Education and Child Care. It also approved the audited financial statements recommended by the audit committee and approved the minor capital plan submission to the Ministry of Infrastructure, as recommended by the facilities planning committee. The Board’s finance and personnel committee meeting report was also received by the Board.
During the report on private session, the chair shared that the Board passed a motion to direct staff to restart public engagement about the proposal to consider closing Sir Guy Carleton Elementary. She also indicated that the Board decided to conclude the process of looking at whether the eastern part of the Bruce Elementary site should be declared surplus. This means no further steps will be taken to subdivide or dispose of that part of the property.
Question Period
Members of the public are invited to submit questions to the Board about governance matters or items on that meeting agenda. Questions submitted to the Board this month included inquiries about financial statements, staff absences, the Foundational Skills Assessments and supports for students who struggle to attend school regularly.
