Superintendent’s Update Celebrating Community and Student Success
At every regular public Board meeting, superintendent McGregor recognizes those in our school community who have profound impacts on students with the Superintendent’s Tribute. This month she recognized the One to One Literacy Society, that supported 550 students this year with help from 120 in-person tutors and an ongoing online option. Longtime Britannia Secondary coach Mike Evans was also honoured for his decades of volunteer service.
McGregor’s update [PM1] to the Board also highlighted information on end of year activities and events, including the event held at the Education Center celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day, Pride events at schools across VSB and student achievements at the Skills Canada competition.
Student trustee farewell
Student trustee Athena Yu gave her final report and was thanked by the Chair for her leadership in sharing student voice with the Board. In her report, Yu shared highlights from the Vancouver District Student Council’s final meeting of the school year, including reflections on the year and the election of the 2025–2026 executive. She also noted the success of the Arts Gala and Student Leadership Fund Showcase. Yu, a Magee graduate, will attend Stanford University. She welcomed incoming student trustee Freddie Zhang from Prince of Wales Secondary.
Board Policy and Governance Updates
The Board reviewed proposed changes to Policies 7 and 8 (Board Operations and Committees). An ad hoc committee will refine the drafts before they return for approval. In the interim for the 2025-2026 school year, the Board approved a revised meeting schedule to give the public more time to review agendas and register to speak.
The Board also approved updates to:
- Policy 19 – Accumulated Surplus, to strengthen financial oversight and transparency.
- Policy 9 – Board Representatives, to improve clarity and alignment with strategic goals.
- Policy 2 – Role of the Board, to modernize and streamline governance practices.
- Policy 11 – Delegation of Authority, to clarify roles and responsibilities.
The 2026–2027 Capital Plan was approved, and trustees supported a motion for staff to explore options for a universal food program, with a report due by December 2025.
Question Period
Four questions were submitted by the public, covering accessibility, enrolment, and inclusive education. The Chair responded to each during the meeting.
