The District marks International Volunteer Day
December 5 marks International Volunteer Day – a global celebration of volunteers. From Parent Advisory Councils to youth volunteer programs, students, families and staff across the District make valuable contributions through volunteering across our schools. To celebrate this special day, the District shares just two stories to highlight their important and valuable work.
The Canley Cup
The CANley Cup is a District-wide event designed by the Vancouver District Students’ Council (VDSC) to raise food and money for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. The funds raised through the CANley Cup provide food access to families, seniors and new Canadians in Vancouver, the North Shore, Burnaby and New Westminster.
Students across the District volunteer to participate in the annual event by holding friendly competitions with other neighbouring schools to promote donations – and the school that collects the most cans win the CANley Cup trophy.
This year due to the pandemic, the CANley Cup is accepting virtual donations.
“Giving back to the community during a pandemic is not only an amazing way to make a positive impact, but also strengthens the bond between schools in the process,” says CANley Cup organizer and Eric Hamber Secondary student, Divyan Karunakaran. “The pandemic has had a serious impact on our lives as a whole, but we are keen on ensuring that those in need are provided with care and support,” Karunakaran adds.

United Way
Every year, District staff show their generosity with contributions to the non-profit United Way through various events and celebrations. This year will look a lot different due to the pandemic. Although the District is unable to host events such as in previous years – like the famous pancake breakfast - the needs for the services provided by United Way to the most vulnerable in our community are greater than ever.
Therefore, this year the District is supporting United Way mostly through online donations as well as staff participating in various volunteer opportunities.
“Thanks to the District’s generous donations and volunteers, the United Way is able to make a positive impact on individuals, families, and our communities, showing local love in so many important ways,” says Shezad Somji, District assistant secretary treasurer.
