Preparing for the start of the Elementary Learn from Home Transition option

We are now at the end of the first week of school which saw teachers, parents and students adjust to new routines, as a new normal is established in classrooms for the 2020-2021 year. In her latest video update, superintendent Suzanne Hoffman says about 75 per cent of elementary students were back in schools for full-time, in-class instruction. Online courses and face-to-face instruction also began in secondary schools.

The Elementary Learn from Home Transition option starts next week (September 21), which will allow students to learn remotely and return to in-class instruction in a gradual way. Students are able to start attending in-person instruction at their school on October 13, 2020, November 9, 2020, or January 5, 2021. Check-ins by teachers will begin next week and will total 1.5 - 2 hours each week, per student. Hoffman notes there will be variations to the Learn from Home Transition option across schools. “There will be the ability to pick up materials, there may be small virtual assemblies that take place or class events, and again, you’ll hear from the school what that will look like for your child,” she says.

Hoffman highlights it is important to the District that space is held for a child in their local school in preparation for their return to the classroom. She also notes the Learn from Home Transition option will not replicate what happens in a classroom, and students will need support from home.

Hoffman emphasizes the goal for the District is to provide support for every child. She expresses her gratitude for teaching staff, support staff, and administrators for their work this past week and as they look ahead to the coming weeks of this unique school year. She also thanks families for their patience.
