It is usually a day for students to come together, share stories about their breaks, and get ready for the next part of the school year. But, as we work through the uncharted territory of dealing with COVID-19, what was supposed to be this year's first day back from spring break is unlike any other experienced.

In her latest video update to keep everyone informed, Vancouver School District superintendent Suzanne Hoffman discusses child care, with the reminder that health and safety of students, staff and the entire community is the number one priority.

She explains the Minister of Education recently tasked school districts to provide child care for essential service workers.

"To that end, we have been working collaboratively with the City of Vancouver. Services in the city are very interconnected and intertwined," says Hoffman. "We work with the Park Board, the City and multiple agencies to provide child care – some of which are in our schools," she adds. "We have been working steadily over the past two weeks as part of the taskforce with the City to provide emergency, temporary child care support for our essential services workers."

Hoffman says information is posted on vsb.bc.ca, school websites, and social media channels. An email was distributed to families of students enrolled in District schools with information about how eligible families can register.

"These times are a challenge, and I'm so thankful and appreciative for the work that is taking place in our community with our healthcare providers and our first responders," she adds.

Hoffman is the mother of a recently graduated nurse and says she is experiencing the impact of healthcare workers on those needing care.

"We as a society, as a community, need to do all that we can to ensure that they are cared for and fully supported."

Hoffman expresses thanks to the community for being patient, understanding, and supportive during this time.
