Kids and summer reading

With only a few more weeks left in the summer holiday, it's not too late to make reading a priority in your family.

Summertime is often a time when reading can take a second place to sun and fun. Summer reading loss refers to the decline in children's reading development that can occur during summer vacation times when children are away from the classroom and not participating in formal literacy programs.

Now is the time to visit your local public library and find books that your family can read together or that children can read on their own.

Listed below are some online resources to help you on your way:

VPL Summer Reading Club: Children ages six to 12 are invited to join the Reading Rocks! Summer Reading Club. Vancouver Public Library also invites school-age children to join the Multilingual Summer Reading Club - read books in any language!

This summer reading initiative is sponsored by the British Columbia Library Association and the Vancouver Public Library, with the assistance of the Public Library Services Branch, Ministry of Education.
