Spectrum has a new home

Spectrum Alternative Program has a new home for this school year. After being housed for a number of years in portable classrooms on the grounds of Vancouver Technical School, the program will now operate at the Waverley Annex Learning Hub at 2530 East 43rd Avenue.

At 30 years old, Spectrum is one of the longest running alternative programs at the Vancouver School Board. The program offers Grade 10, 11 and 12 subjects on a semester system to a broad range of students from across the district.

The new site will afford a number of improvements in terms of working and learning conditions. A couple of immediate improvements are a new student computer lab, student lockers, a gymnasium/weight room, a full home economics lab, separate washrooms for students and staff, regular size classrooms and a career resource centre.

Ron Bergeron, district principal for alternative programs said "I'm pleased that the head teacher Frances Alley and many current Spectrum staff will continue to ensure quality program services to students. In addition, with student input, they'll play an instrumental role in designing the future of the Spectrum program."

With its small classes and semester system, Spectrum appeals to a range of students including those who are employed, or who've recently moved from another district with a semester system.

Students take a maximum of four classes a semester which appeals to students who need a flexible schedule in order to continue their education. Smaller classes also allow for more individualized support from teachers, as well as youth and family workers.

Bergeron said that over the years Spectrum program has helped many students re-engage in their learning and build positive futures.

"I'm confident that the program relocation and resulting new directions will allow even more students to access an appropriate program that meets their educational needs."

Bergeron said he is excited about sharing the new site with the West and Foundations programs. "With the hub we hope to expand services and support to our students including offering health services and sharing guest speakers."
