Three Chief Justices Share Collective Wisdom at Eric Hamber Secondary Law Forum
Some of the top legal minds in Canada shared their professional wisdom with Eric Hamber law students at the school's first Law Forum on April 3. The B.C. Bar Association invited Provincial Court of B.C. Chief Justice Thomas Crabtree, Supreme Court of B.C. Chief Justice Robert Bauman and B.C. Court of Appeal Chief Justice Lance Finch to discuss legal issues with students face to face at the forum hosted by CBC anchor Ian Hanomansing.
The forum kicked off with a brief introduction from each of the senior judges and reached its climax as students came forward to ask questions. Many students seized this opportunity to raise controversial issues. Zak Vescera, a Grade 10 student, asked if technology should be allowed in court and Tony Dong, a Grade 11 student questioned the existing laws for cyber-bullying. The Chief Justices answered each question posed by students in great details.
Grade 9 student Maxwell Iverson, who also participated in Q&A, said the forum changed his perspective of law enforcement and justice, which he had developed by watching TV. Iverson said the Law Forum allowed him to understand the law in a more comprehensive way.
The Chief Justices explained to students the "Top Ten, Myths and Misperceptions" regarding the courts, law and explored sensitive issues including perceived political and the personal bias of justices.
Throughout the forum, Hanomansing kept the proceedings humming along and helped foster a thoughtful dialog between students and Chief Justices. Hanomansing said that part of the power of the Hamber Law Forum was the unique opportunity for students to communicate directly with very senior legal minds in order to gain a more realistic insight about how law could impact their daily lives.
